Roblox
Roblox is all the rage at the moment, with over 100 million active monthly players. Initially developed back in 2006 by Roblox Corp, kids from all over the world are joining this online world which is not just a single game but actually a collection of over 18 million games that are built by users. You could think of Roblox as the Lego providing the virtual building bocks, which users then create a wide variety of online games, stories and creations.
Users can create profiles and even avatars which can optionally maintain their appearance across different games. Some parallels may be drawn to worlds like Second Life, but often with lower resolution allowing for faster more responsive movement. There are some similarities to Minecraft as well. User’s are able to connect with users as friends which allow them communicate either in individual games or across the network.
Some particularly popular games built on this framework are the roleplay game Adopt Me, Tower of Hell and Meep City. Some games really push the boundaries of possibilities with graphics such as the impressive Dragon’s Life and even the new release Wings of Fire franchise based on the popular book series by Tui T.
